Three very different reading problems that look the same from home

Reading the words

Slow, effortful reading, guessing at words, avoiding reading aloud. The energy goes into decoding, so little is left for meaning.

Understanding the words

Reads smoothly, then can't tell you what happened. Reading and understanding are two separate jobs, and only one of them may be breaking down.

Getting it onto paper

Explains beautifully out loud, writes very little. Spelling, handwriting and sentence building all compete for the same effort, and the ideas get squeezed out.

Which one is happening changes everything about what helps. That is what Eva works out first.

When a child reads every word and understands none of it

From the outside it looks like a child who isn't paying attention. Usually the effort is going somewhere you can't see. Eva explains where.

What reading and writing tutoring covers

  • Phonics and decoding for children still building the basics
  • Reading fluency, so reading stops being exhausting
  • Reading comprehension and making sense of longer texts
  • Spelling patterns that make sense rather than lists to memorize
  • Writing: planning, sentences, paragraphs and finishing the piece
  • Reading and writing across subjects, including math word problems

Dyslexia and learning differences

Eva has dyslexia herself and holds a Special Education Additional Qualification. She works with children who have a diagnosis, children whose families are wondering about one, and children who simply find reading harder than it should be.

She does not diagnose. If she thinks a psychologist or speech-language pathologist should be involved, she will tell you clearly and explain what to ask for.

Why Eva notices what others miss

Eva had dyslexia and a speech impediment as a child, and found reading, writing and math hard. She repeated courses. She took calculus three times.

So she knows what a child does when learning is hard and they would rather nobody noticed: the strategies for looking like you are keeping up, and what it costs to appear fine.

After 17 years of teaching, those are still the children she pays closest attention to.
